About DVD Films
- Overview
What
is DVD?
DVD
stands for either Digital Video Disk or Digital Versatile
Disk; the latter probably being the more commonly used. Both
descriptions are correct, as although it is used as a medium
for home video viewing, the format has a diverse number of
uses. DVDs are used as a medium for storing large amounts
of information, mostly motion pictures, due to the fact that
they require a lot of space. DVDs are similar in appearance
to CD-ROMs, which are commonplace today. However, though similar
in appearance, they act in a very different way. DVDs cannot
be used with CD players, they can only be used through DVD
drives.
The aim
of DVD is to combine all entertainment mediums, i.e. television,
computer and audio, into one single entertainment medium.
DVD emerged
from the coalition of a number of entertainment hardware and
software manufacturers who believed that a new media type
should be developed with optical technology, which would have
the ability to store high capacity motion pictures, audio
and other multimedia types. The manufacturers were:
Hitachi,
JVC, Matsushita, Mitsubishi, Phillips, Pioneer, Sony, Time
Warner and Toshiba.
Storage
Capacity
DVD
has the ability to store from 4 Gigabytes up to 17 Gigabytes
of data, utilising its single side single layer, double layer
single side, and double layer double side capabilities.
Random
Access
DVD-Video
is a completely interactive medium. As videos are stored in
no sequential order, like CDs, users have the ability to program
what they want to watch. For example, only certain scenes
of a film may want to be watched.
In addition,
due to the capability of DVDs to hold such vast amounts of
data, users have the ability to view scenes from a number
of angles. Around 8 to 10 streams of video, all showing the
same images, but from another angle, can be stored on a DVD.
For example, if when watching a tennis match, the user cant
see if the ball hit the line or not, he/she can select to
view the stroke from another angle, recorded on a separate
camera within the stadium. Thus, viewers can get a real feel
of being in a football ground or a tennis stadium, by selecting
where they want to sit.
Audio
Channels
DVD
players can use up to 8 audio channels to give superb surround-sound
using the Dolby surround-sound system.
Multiple
Languages
With
the increasing demand for programs to be shown in different
languages, DVD-Video provides the ability to hold up to 8
soundtracks in 8 different languages.
Subtitles
DVD-Video
has the ability to store up to 32 subtitle files to benefit
the deaf or those who dont want any sound.
Durability
Unlike
Videotapes, DVDs are not prone to wear, and so their quality
of playback and recording does not diminish with age. Although
you still have to be careful not to scratch a DVD which could
make it unplayable.
Compact
Even
though DVDs can store up to 26 times the amount of data of
CDs, they are still the same size as CDs.
DVD Films - Parental Locks
Parents
have the ability to have peace of mind when purchasing DVD-Videos.
They do not have to worry if the film is an 18 certificate
and if small children will be able to watch them. DVD-Videos
can store a number of runs of a film each edited
in a different way. For example, a directors cut of
the film could be put onto the DVD along with a 12-certificate
edit, a 15-certificate edit and an 18-certificate edit.
